New Year, New Style

Wed 3 Jan 2018 Amy Kilvington

2018 has finally arrived and we couldn’t be more excited to get stuck in. For some, January is a time for cutting back, clearing out and making resolutions. For us, it’s more about looking forward and embracing the possibilities of the new year.

We recently looked back at interior design in 2017, and while we enjoyed the diversity of the trends and hope to see them cropping up again over the next twelve months, we’re keen for 2018 to be a year of fresh looks and experimentation. Pantone’s very own Color of the Year is all about spontaneity and creativity, after all. Let’s take inspiration from Ultra Violet and be bold, brave and unlimited by boundaries. It’s time to be imaginative and try new things! Here are our top tips for launching your fresh interior style into the new year…

Adorn your walls

Wallpaper is making a comeback, and it’s no longer limited to a subtle print upon one feature wall. Consider introducing big, bold patterns into your space, creating a super stylish busy-ness that’s both exciting and homely. Choose from a wide range of botanicals, chintz and abstract prints, selecting a statement design in colour-pop shades like turquoise, pink, orange and purple. If big and bold wallpaper is out of your comfort zone, look towards a supersize piece of artwork or a gallery wall of various eye-catching prints. You can shop the featured floral design, from Clarke & Clarke’s Artbook collection, available as curtains, cushions and Roman blinds here.

It’s all in the detail

As well as introducing intricate patterns to your walls, why not try bringing little design details to other areas of the home? Forget about clean lines and clutter-free surfaces – instead, look towards interesting flourishes, fringes and etchings that create a more unique and charming interior style. Independent homeware retailers and markets are the perfect places to discover items with unusual details, especially if you’re keen to inject an artisanal flair into your space. Personalised details can also be added through sentimental items like photographs and trinkets from your travels. Present these pieces proudly on shelves and surfaces, creating special areas of interest throughout your home.

Don’t be afraid of unusual combinations

2018 design trends are all about experimentation and pushing boundaries. With that in mind, mix up your colours and prints in a way that’s different for you. Don’t feel constrained to the same old looks and styles. Instead, try pairing different textiles and pieces for an exciting mismatched effect. If you’re afraid of clashes, ground your scheme with a key neutral base colour and pick two or three feature colours to layer on top. By anchoring your interiors with a classic backdrop, you can feel more confident in experimenting with accents.

Embrace the ’80s

The maximalist trend of the 1980s is back, which means plenty of super-sized shapes and bold upholstery. Layer up rugs, throws and cushions for a cool, over-decorated feeling, and make use of free surfaces by placing your favourite decorations and crafts. You could also consider 80s pastels, bringing a softer feminine touch to your home. Glass, mirrors and high-shine plastic finishes will offer another nod towards this iconic decade, along with geometric lines and prints that channel a sleek, powerful modernity.

Extra special effects

You can also bring excitement and style to your space with fabrics and textures that offer additional qualities. Ombre effects, metallic sheens and tactile fibres will all contribute to a more interesting decor theme, adding a fresh dimension  to the room. Welcome these extra special touches in the form of cushions, curtains and blinds. Take a look at our full collection of window dressings to discover the perfect style for your home.
