2017 In Interiors: A Look Back

Mon 18 Dec 2017 Amy Kilvington

As 2017 draws to a close, it’s time for our interior specialists to take a look back at their favourite trends of the year. The last 12 months have been filled with a diversity of decor, from Scandi style to mixed metals, from Greenery to geo prints, 2017 certainly hasn’t disappointed us on the interior design front. But what were the highlights? And which styles do we hope to see more of next year? Read on to find out more…

Nature

It’s so exciting to see how the nature look has been embraced. We’ve loved 2017’s focus on natural wood tones, stem prints and bright florals. Earthy, natural tones of burnt orange and deep red have also been popular, along with moody shades of blue and green, which are reminiscent of the ocean. This variety of environment-inspired tones and patterns has been warmly welcomed by the interior design world, bringing contemporary excitement to the home whilst maintaining a strong relationship with the natural world. We hope this trend continues!

Texture

There’s been a great use of texture in decor over the last 12 months. This includes plush fabrics, such as velvets and chenilles, combined with soft simple cottons and linens. These contrasting textures have been enhanced by different shades, with vibrant jewel shades toning against warm neutrals like taupe and beige. Thick woven rugs and textured cushions have been very popular, in an eclectic mix of patterns. We’ve also enjoyed seeing the use of one colour in a combination of different fabrics and textures, bringing more depth to an otherwise ‘flat’ style.

Geo Prints

We’ve also loved the popularity of geo prints in 2017, particularly in bedding, soft furnishings and window treatments. These new geometrics have appeared as both subtle pastel prints (in shades of mint, blush and white/cream) and deep, moody combinations (featuring luxurious tones of deep teal and gold). Geo prints have increased in size over the last year, and it’s been fabulous to see large-scale shapes and lines in various areas of the home. We’ve suddenly become a lot braver with our use of pattern, and the dramatic colours and patterns have really paid off.

Greenery

Pantone’s Color of the Year played a huge role throughout 2017. This fresh, natural tone aimed to rejuvenate and revitalise, breathing a new lease of life into the home. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing Greenery incorporated in a number of ways, from feature walls and statement furniture, to subtle splashes in floral and geometric patterns. Greenery has also worked wonders in its natural form, with so many homeowners now introducing plant life indoors; cacti, ivy, cheese plants and bamboo are just some of the ‘real life’ Greenery that we’re seeing in different spaces in the home.

Reflections

Mirrors and reflective surfaces have been hugely popular this year. Traditional mirrors have been mixed with coloured glass, high-shine stones and metal, bouncing light around a space in a more creative way. Iridescent pearl finishes have brought a feminine twist, while crystal effects offer glitz and glamour. On a larger scale, glass has played a big part in architecture and has been combine with ecologically mindful materials, helping to reduce environmental footprints whilst maintain slickness and modernity.

Metal

Finally, there’s been a big focus on metal throughout the last year, including brushed and hammered pieces right through the high-shine lustrous golds and silvers. We’ve observed plenty of metal utilised in lighting, furniture and decorative accessories. It’s been great to see the gradual shift away from industrial metals to a more artisanal feel, which is where the burnished styles have come to the forefront. Metallics have also played a leading role in fabrics, inspiring the use of shimmers and sheens. Here’s hoping for more mixed metals in 2018!
