‘Tis the season to get cleaning… fa la la la la.

Season’s greetings! No, we’re not crazy, we are saying season’s greetings in May. Surely you know that today (May 10th) is Clean up Your Room Day?

Yes, the one day where you simply cannot avoid that tidy-up you’ve been putting off all year. Fortunately (or unfortunately), this year the holiday falls on a Sunday, meaning that most of you will have even more free time to get cleaning.

Thankfully, we at Roman Blinds Direct go further than just offering you the highest quality roman blinds around, and we are furnishing you with a handful of tips to make your task an easier one. Here are a few golden nuggets of advice to stop you from getting the holiday blues:

1. Top to bottom means just that.

The common phrase has always been ‘clean the house from top to bottom’, and this is exactly the way to go about things. When beginning a major cleaning job, leave your floors until the very end.

While you’re going over the top of clocks, picture frames and work surfaces with feather dusters and wet wipes, you are transferring the majority of the dirt onto the floor – do you really need to break your back for the sake of a clean floor, only to have it soiled straight away? By waiting until you are finished cleaning everything else, you will be ridding your rooms of even more dirt when the time comes to break out the mop or the vacuum.

2. Never underestimate the heroism of bread.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s super loaf! Though it may be true that white bread isn’t exactly winning any awards for being the healthiest product out there as far as diet is concerned, this absorbent and spongy wonder does have an unlikely use.

This floury foodstuff is actually incredibly effective at removing smudges from walls; cleaning out your coffee grinder; mopping up mealtime spillages and even dusting down an old painting. It’s probably best not to try and wipe down your blinds with it, though… and don’t even think about eating it afterwards.

Bread: is there anything it can't do?

3. Roman blinds aren’t necessarily a chore to clean.

To help keep your blinds in tiptop condition without needing to dry clean or them or take them down to wash, a great way to maintain them is to vacuum them. Use the brush attachment to lightly go over the fabric, which will remove dust and general dirt from your fabulous roman blind. If your blind is in a bad way it may need to be cleaned properly, but if it’s suffering from the odd surface stain, spot cleaning should do the trick.

4. Have a system and stick to it.

The cleaning experts recommend beginning your task by starting on the left hand side of the doorway and moving across the room in a clockwise direction, again cleaning from top to bottom as you go. In time this routine, or whichever routine you choose instead, will become just that, and you will find that cleaning becomes a much swifter process as you get into the swing of things.

One final helpful hint…

National Clean Up Your Room Day is also National Shrimp Day, so once you’ve finished your cleaning you can go out to your favourite restaurant for some selfish indulgence – no, we didn’t go there.
