July 14th, or Bastille Day as it more commonly known to the French, commemorates democracy in modern France, and is a French public holiday. It represents the beginning of the country becoming a democratic republic, and the end of constitutional monarchy.

Despite being a holiday that is symbolic of freedom and democracy, Bastille was, in fact, a prison, which was stormed in 1789 during the French Revolution. During the reign of Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette, France was an absolute monarchy; there was no democracy, other than the orders of the king and queen. While the poor starved, the monarchs and their friends indulged in excessive banquets, lived in luxurious palaces and mansions and dressed in clothes that were the very definition of opulence.

Anyone who spoke out against this unfair system usually found themselves being thrown into prison; even Voltaire landed himself in Bastille.

On July 14, the poor finally revolted against the unjust society and attacked the prison. Seizing the weaponry from Bastille, the mob released the prisoners and initiated one of the most famous revolutions in history.

To our friends across the pond, Bastille Day is celebrated with military parades, however, we at Roman Blinds Direct are celebrating with out French-themed fabrics! Head over to our website now to take a look at our Go French collection, which showcases our stunning fabrics by Casadeco.
