Tropical Interior Design Trends

Tropical interiors have never been hotter. From cactus prints and flamingo patterns to psychedelic jungle scenes, the Tropical Trend is as diverse as it is eye-catching. So which tropical theme appeals to you the most? Let’s explore them…

We see the Tropical Trend everywhere. It currently plays a huge role in the interior design industry and you’d be hard pushed to visit a homeware store without spotting a palm print fabric or pineapple decoration. What makes the Tropical Trend so successful is its ability to adapt to every type of setting. Whether you’re looking to make a large-scale statement or introduce excitement in a more subtle way, tropical touches can be incorporated into your home with creativity and tact, complementing your own unique style.

The Tropical Trend also brings with it a story – one of sunshine, wild animals and undiscovered lands. It is exciting and mystical, bringing aspects of dreamworlds into our very normal homes. But you needn’t feel limited to palm leaves and pineapples when exploring this style. Here are some of our favourite and more unusual categories within the Tropical Trend, with expert advice on how to work with them:

Nocturnal Jungle

Typical tropicals tend to stick to a bright colour palette, but this season, deep and dark exotic styles have flown to the forefront. These midnight jungles work wonderfully in the bedroom or living room, offering vibrance and interest with a crisp black backdrop. Bring the Nocturnal Jungle into your home in the form of window blinds, wallpaper, bedsheets and cushions. You could also opt for a feature wall in a dark shade (teal, petrol, purple and navy blue work well), then hang two or three large pieces of botanical artwork, or a more intricate gallery wall of tropical prints. Here are some of our favourite tropical Roman blinds that nod towards the Nocturnal Jungle trend. Click the images to shop!

Fancy Flamingo

Flamingoes have become a real favourite throughout the Tropical Trend. Their famous silhouettes are the perfect means for bringing an elegant tropical twist into your home. Pair with natural muted tones for a more sophisticated style; when it comes to soft furnishings, linens and fine weaves work well, complementing the pink tones.  This look can also be applied to feature walls and shelf decorations… quirky lamps and side tables that take inspiration from their forms are also a must-see for fans of quirky interiors! The Fancy Flamingo style offers a dreamy approach to tropicals and we love seeing it paired with warm metallics and luxurious materials. Get the look by clicking the products below.

Cactus Cool

Having soared to popularity in the 1950s, our current cactus revival coincides with both the Tropical Trend and Mid-Century Modern, once again asserting itself as the interior design industry’s favourite plant. With vibrant colours, simple shapes and unusual textures, cactuses are perfect for bringing visual interest to a space, both in their natural forms and as sculptures and prints. Brimming with personality, Cactus Cool is a fresh alternative to tropicals, drawing us out of the jungle and into the desert to enjoy their simplicity and charm. Exotic Birds

Parrots, toucans and hummingbirds are just some of the Exotic Birds that have flown into tropical interiors. Present bright contrasting colour palettes, their vibrant feather tones stand out beautifully against neutral backdrops. Of course, their bold shapes also work beautifully amongst other exotic foliage, offering additional detail to a colourful jungle scene or botanical design. Bring Exotic Birds style into your home in the form of window dressings, cushions and eye-catching pieces of art. For a bigger statement, look for wallpaper adorned with these colourful creatures. You could also add a subtle touch of Exotic Birds with simple feather designs.

Under The Sea

The Tropical Trend isn’t just limited to rainforests and deserts, of course. Under The Sea is another style that evokes a sense of paradise, and it’s great to see these deep sea styles making a splash throughout our homes. Transport yourself to faraway oceans with the help of intricate coral prints, colourful fish patterns and shimmering turquoise shades. We all know so little of the underwater world, so it’s a fascinating theme to explore at home. Under The Sea is a very different take on the Tropical Trend, steering away from luscious greens and botanical designs in favour of submarine multicolours and glistening textures.
