The World’s Favourite Colour: Marrs Green

Fri 20 Oct 2017 Amy Kilvington

In 2017 the results of a global survey discovered the most popular colour in the world. With over 30,000 submissions from more than 100 countries, there were plenty of shades to consider. However, popular consensus quickly determined that our favourite colour is a vibrant blend of greeny-blue: Marrs Green.

Submitted by fine arts graduate Annie Marrs, this vibrant shade was inspired by the blues, greys and greens of the Scottish landscape. Editor of Viewpoint Colour Magazine Caroline Till suggests that the colour’s success is owed to our desire to reconnect with the natural world: “As the contemporary condition of ‘nature deficit’ rises in the context of increasingly urban and digital lifestyles, we seek to reconnect with the natural world, hence the current global popularity of the colour green… In these uncertain times, where political and social upheaval has become the norm, we crave the calming tranquility of green and its association with the reassuring certainty of nature’s cycles.”

“A burst of the freshest air… the scope of lush rolling fields… the drama and depth of the ocean.”

Marrs Green is a strong shade of teal with dark undertones. This blend of green and blue is undeniably nature-related, offering a burst of the freshest air, the scope of lush rolling fields, and the drama and depth of the ocean. It’s no surprise that consumers are more keen than ever to invest in clothing, accessories and homeware in this vibrant shade. Its stature as the world’s leading colour has now seen teal interior products surge in popularity, with homeowners desperate to bring a touch of Marrs Green into their living spaces.

“This shade of teal is an inspiring accent colour.”

Fortunately, the colour works brilliantly with a range of other shades, and is likely to coordinate with your existing decor. Team it with a simple neutral palette or taupes and creams for a calming, mature effect, or pair with lively yellows and oranges for balance and vibrance. Marrs Green also works well alongside metallics like copper and gold, as well as complementing woody organic textures and tones. What’s more, this shade of teal is an inspiring accent colour. Introduce it into your space in the form of cushions, rugs, vases and lamp shades, amping up your current interior scheme with a bright, modernistic edge.
