Spicy Mustard: Autumn – Winter Weekly Colour Report

This week’s room design ideas come in a spicier flavour than last week’s Dusty Cedar. With properties that are very reminiscent of the yellows prominent in 1970’s room inspiration, Spicy Mustard is Pantone’s tangy injection of optimism into an otherwise, rather muted palette.

Spicy Mustard is the autumn juxtaposition to the yellow featured in Pantone’s Spring – Summer palette, Buttercup. Both yellows are the brightest shades in their respective palettes, but both also bestow different energies into a room. While Buttercup brought the sunshine, Spicy Mustard brings the spice; whereas Buttercup was a vibrant injection of light, Spicy Mustard is an abstract shade of warm depth.

Although this shade may be darker than its spring counterpart, Spicy Mustard is just what the style doctor ordered for styling an autumn – winter decor. During the colder months, warm colours count for much more than bright ones, and this unusual shade of yellow is ideal for exuding a subdued positivity throughout a room.

The only potential pitfall with Spicy Mustard is that it can be incredibly overpowering, which is why our interior designers here at Roman Blinds Direct recommend using this vibrant tone as an accent colour instead of as a base. This shade abounds with room design ideas, but today we have chosen to demonstrate how it can be best-used in the living room.

An excellent base colour to complement Spicy Mustard would be the earthy Potter’s Clay. Another of Pantone’s Fall 2016 colours, and one we will be putting the focus on in a few weeks’ time, this neutral earth tone provides a rustic foundation colour, which both coordinates with Spicy Mustard yet also helps the yellow to stand out more in a room. This is the perfect shade to help accentuate Spicy Mustard’s tang, without it becoming overbearing.

Paint is preferential to wallpaper, adding to the natural feel of a room while also helping to generate a warmer ambience. Our stylists would suggest leaving your floorboards bare, helping you to feel that bit closer to the earth. A rug in a green shade of Lush Meadow – another seventies-inspired colour – would be the finishing touch to this rural theme, evoking images of fresh green grass underfoot. A plastic side table in a deep green shade would coordinate beautifully with this rug, and also evoke the spirit of the seventies.

Spicy Mustard 70's

As far as using Spicy Mustard itself, inject it through your fabric; lampshades and roman blinds in this spicy shade are striking focal points that aren’t too brash. When it comes to your roman blinds, we would suggest the zesty and vivacious Prestigious Tily Antique. This snazzy striped pattern incorporates a vivid mix of colours, including Mustard tones of yellow, and also Potter’s Clay shades to coordinate with your walls. A patterned roman blind, it promises to sweeten any decor with its timeless elegance and perpetual charm.

A totally seventies idea would be to include a couch that both clashes and coordinates with the rest of the decor. We recommend using another on-trend shade for this winter, Bodacious; this daring shade of purple is bold enough to stand out, but just dark enough to avoid being a tacky eyesore. Matching accessories could include photo frames or ornaments, placed sparingly around the room.

Accessorise this couch with cushions in varying colours to create a diverse and sprightly look; incorporate a couple in Spicy Mustard-coloured fabrics, for example our exclusive Touched by Design Panama Sunshine, and why not add some patterned cushions to finish the look? Part of our seventies-inspired Carnaby collection, Studio G Folki Spice and Fryetts Campervan Multi are ideal for producing a funky, retro look that is sure to stun. Finally, a deep hint of red, such as our Touched by Design Accent Rouge, would make a brooding and regal statement amidst the brighter colours.

Finally, a chair in a neutral tone of oatmeal brings the room back to earth, especially when it is accessorised with a more traditional cushion – our stylists suggest a tartan fabric like our evergreen Fryetts Balmoral Sage.
