70s

This autumn is set to see an awesomely eclectic range of styles take centre stage, and we at Roman Blinds Direct are just bursting with room design ideas that we can’t wait to share with you!

We are beginning this week with a trend we’ve been waiting to see re-emerge for quite some time: the 1970’s. This decade was famous for its extravagant colours and groovy sense of style – kitsch is most definitely cool in the world of 1970’s room inspiration. This motif is ideally suited to open-plan homes, which let the funky vibes transfer from room to room, but it really does look fantastic in any decor, no matter how spacious or small.

To fashion a truly ‘happening’ 1970’s decor, you will need an array of vibrant colours. There’s no need to be afraid to mix and match your shades, bold tones of yellow, green and orange are essential for creating that retro atmosphere.

Be sure to keep your walls in lighter shades, such as soft yellows or deep oranges; this will create a warm and jovial atmosphere, prefect for hosting parties and gatherings with friends. Draping one wall with a tapestry would be an inspired and fitting finishing touch.

The room’s lighting should be warm and subdued, radiating an intimate setting for when you’re spinning your records on the turntable or cooking with your fondue set. Table lamps with lampshades in dark blues or greens are ideal for achieving this lighting, allowing you to place them wherever in the room is the most advantageous and effective.

As for your window coverings, we feel that the only fabric we could possibly choose to showcase for this style is our fabulous Fryetts Campervan Multi. Featuring a brilliantly retro campervan print, this pattern is the ideal and inspired complement to this trend, symbolising one of the most iconic artefacts from the decade. Campervan Multi promises to transport your home right back to the 1970’s, lending kitsch and colourful style to your windows. Curtains in this fabric would be perfect for this ambience.

1970sSmooth, geometric shapes were the ‘in’ thing, furniture-wise. In your living room, have a round coffee table, invest in a curved sofa to go around two of your walls, and incorporate some soft, plush cushions to further soften the motif, preferably in a different fabric to your curtains. Our interior designers recommend Prestigious Verve Juice; a beautiful opal design, this patterned cushion is a vibrant and colourful accessory to any decor. This cushion is the epitome of 1970’s fashion; flamboyant and eye-catching, it is a chic focal point in any room in the home.

Smaller sofas also look spectacular in 70’s-themed homes, particularly those which have feet to raise them off the ground, creating an airy and weightless feel in your living room.

In bedrooms and living rooms alike, drawers and sideboards that don’t have pointed edges are preferred. Smooth edged furniture keeps a decor looking mellow and relaxed, which is the vibe you are striving for.

When it comes to flooring, carpets in neutral colours are ideal. This can be accessorised with a sheepskin rug to bring out the soft tones of the carpet, as well as adding to the classic feel.

The small details really are important when styling a decor that reflects a particular decade. Touches like vintage digital clocks and hanging lights that have canteen-styled lightshades can make all the difference when it comes to achieving an authentic 1970’s aura.

If you are a fan of vinyl, this is the perfect excuse to proudly display your choice cuts from the decade. This can be done by framing some of your favourite album covers from the 1970’s and hanging them on the wall – nothing says 1970’s quite like having a copy of Rumours, Blue or Hotel California proudly adorning the walls. Alternatively, you could embrace the laidback approach and have them stacked up against the record player on the floor. Much like your decor, your music taste is an expression of who you are – why wouldn’t you want to show off your personal favourites? They are a work of art, after all!

Finally, aside from your album artwork, your walls should be covered with striking imagery. Andy Warhol prints would be the perfect finishing touch to this motif, as would more abstract paintings such as work by Gutai. Vintage advertisements and posters are also fantastic complements to this decade’s decor.
